William Bird was educated at Queen’s College, University of Cambridge, UK. He has an MA in Natural Sciences (inter alia physics, chemistry, biology of cells) majoring in Physics. He has worked in the Middle East, Africa and the UK as a manager in the major industrial activities of product R&D, process R&D and technical marketing, from which he has obtained a wide experience of the requirements and functioning of an industrial company. He also has exceptional experience in a wide range of technologies.
William is a UK Chartered Electrical and Electronic engineer having experience in a wide range of topics from wired power distribution (from supertension to low voltage distribution) to wireless and wired telecommunications, semiconductor design and processing; computer technologies; computer peripherals, projection and display technologies, medical imaging and devices.
William Bird has three decades’ experience in the IP field, such as patent searching, patent drafting and prosecution, litigation, freedom-to-operate, landscaping and patent valuation, and has been leading high profile oppositions for the last 15 years. He started his career as a private practice patent attorney at Hoffmann & Eitle (München), has worked as a corporate patent counsel in industry (3M Europe) before founding the successful patent firm Bird Goën & Co in Belgium. In May 2012 William founded the patent firm Patentive in Düsseldorf, Germany. William joined IPLodge in September 2015.
He is a member of the Board of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) Benelux Chapter, where he is an accredited tutor and participates in the conceptual organization of and the lecturing at the annual LES Benelux Advanced Licensing Course.
William has been a tutor at CEIPI, the University of Strasbourg for the last 25 years and presently teaches courses to prospective patent attorneys for inventive step and opposition. He has taught opposition courses at the European Patent Office. He also lecturer in the Post-Graduate Programme in Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Medicine at the School of Medicine of ULB.
William is a qualified British, German and European patent attorney and hence has a unique expertise in both common law and civil law systems. He is also a British trademark agent and a registered professional representative before OHIM, the European trademark and design office.
He is a registered as an IP litigator with IPREG. William is an approved instructor in Intangible Asset Management and is a Certified Patent Valuation analyst. He is also entitled to represent clients before the future Unified Patent Court.
William’s native language is English, and his secondary working language is German. He also has a passive knowledge of Dutch.
